GI Pipes
Grades, sizes and the unit each material is priced in.
Overview
What this covers
Applications
Typical uses
- Water supply lines where GI is specified
- Structural and fencing applications
- Handrails and posts in exposed positions
- Conduit and sleeving
Specification
What identifies the material
These are the details a quotation works from. The more you can give, the fewer questions come back.
- Nominal bore
- Class, where specified
- Length per piece
- Quantity in pieces, metres or weight
- Threaded ends, where required
- Whether the application is water supply or structural

Size and quantity are what a quotation needs. Everything else helps.
Grade, size and availability are confirmed at quotation. Cutting capability, tolerance, minimum length and charges are confirmed during quotation.
Calculate
Work out the weight or quantity
The calculator prints the formula and the density it used, so the figure can be checked.
Price
What affects the price
- Material and grade
- Section size and wall thickness
- Quantity
- Current market rate
- Cut lengths, where required and available
- Transport
- Unloading arrangements
- Galvanising and class
Availability
What affects availability
- Size and section
- Grade or class specified
- Quantity required
- Whether the size is held or ordered in
- Supplier location
- Transport availability
Quotation
What to send with an enquiry
- Material and grade or class
- Section, diameter, width, height and wall thickness
- Length per piece, and whether cut lengths are required
- Quantity in the unit you buy
- Delivery location and site access
- Who unloads at the far end
- The date it is needed on site
Avoid
Common mistakes
- Not stating the class where the application requires a specific one
- Assuming structural GI and water-supply GI are interchangeable without checking
- Ordering unthreaded pipe for a threaded installation
Questions
Frequently asked
What does the class of a GI pipe mean?
Class relates to wall thickness for a given nominal bore. Where your specification names a class, state it — substituting classes changes both the pressure capability and the price.
Can GI pipe be used for drinking water?
That depends on the specification, the application and any regulatory requirement that applies. Tell us the application and the specification you are working to, and we will quote to it rather than assume.
